Global Language Village
A Program of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, USA

Global Language Villages offers adults an unparalleled opportunity to experience China through interaction with Chinese students. In this three-week program, you will have an unforgettable cultural experience and develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

Village Life
During your Village stay, you are introduced to the language and adopt its customs as your own. While curriculum differs among the Villages, basic elements of cultural instruction include traditions, holidays, music, dances, ethnic crafts, sports, and historical and current events. Native and expert speakers help villagers settle in and feel at home during daily language sessions. One-third to one-half of the staff at each Village is comprised of native speakers who contribute to the authenticity of the program. Villagers receive plenty of individualized attention, with an approximate one-to-four staff to villager ratio. “Travel” to any of the 13 Language Villages includes a customs inspection. Villagers are issued a passport, choose a new name, taste authentic food, and exchange money to the currency of the country. Villagers choose from one-, two-, or four-week summer sessions. Village weekends, study abroad programs and adult programs are also offered. Each Village conveys a strong sense of community that goes far beyond the mere physical layout. Consider the fact that villagers and staff bring varying backgrounds and attitudes, then add the multifaceted life and culture of the countries represented in the program; it soon becomes obvious what a heterogeneous community this truly is. Perhaps even more important, the Villages provides a safe, supportive community where young people can try new things and different perspectives...without fear of failure.

Language and Culture Classes:
The daily language and culture classes provide the continuity for the language villages. Students meet with you and participate in conversation about American and Chinese culture. Discussions on the differences between schools in the U.S. and China are always interesting for everyone! Global Language Villages provides sample lessons for teachers to use as-is or as a starting point for lessons of their own creation. Other topics include: • Family and diversity • American food and restaurants • Birthday celebrations • Holidays and ceremonies • Hobbies and sports • Music and entertainment

Activity Periods
The specific content of daily activity periods will depend on your skills and interests, but will generally include American sports and games and visual and performing arts. Activities might vary from card games to making clay beads to juggling. Students will rotate from teacher to teacher during these times, thus meeting and conversing with a variety of native English speakers. You will repeat the same activity day after day with a different group of students. One of the three activity periods could be the choice of the students and could take place over several days, allowing for participation in activities such as chorus or a village newspaper. Evening Programs Evening programs allow the whole language village to interact as a community. The students have the opportunity to participate in events American students might experience. Evening programs include Bingo and outdoor games, typical camp activities like sing-alongs, variety shows, dances and movies in English. Evening programs are arranged by each dean, incorporating the strengths and interest of participants.

What is the Intensive English Language Course ?
The four-week Intensive English Language Course is designed for students aged 15-18 who are planning to attend high school or college in the United States. The curriculum is organized around themes and sub-themes addressing aspects of living in a community. Classes will spend three to four days on a theme, using group sessions, fieldtrips, and other learning activities. Portfolio projects encourage creativity and language use, and demonstrate each villager’s progress. The underlying goals of this curriculum are to build speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English, and to create and establish personal relationships at the English Language Village and surrounding community.

What are the benefits of the program ?
We expect each student to become a better and more responsible global citizen by: • progressing in language learning • increasing cultural knowledge and understanding • developing social and community living skills and personal growth (such as independence, compassion, decision-making and risk assessment.)
