Touring Around China
by Steve Garvey
Joined since: 2005 - present
Origin: Iowa, U.S.A
My name is Steve Garvey and I’m a new teacher at Beijing New Oriental. Coming to China for the first time was a real shock and I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at the Shanghai airport in August. My first impression was lost luggage, but over the months I have gotten used to life in The Peoples Republic of China.
When I graduated from college last spring and was searching for a job, China was one of the first places I began to look. I wanted to live in China so that I could learn the Chinese language. I studied Spanish for 8 years in the US, and I found that learning a new language was both interesting and fun. I choose living in China over a Spanish speaking country because I wanted to learn a third language. After living in Yangzhou for 7 months my Chinese is little to none, but it’s interesting and I’m having fun learning.
In addition to learning a new language, another reason for coming to China was to expose myself to a new culture, new writing system and new food. I’ve gotten the hang of cultural norms and Chinese manners. I cannot read or write characters, but I hope to become literate soon. I really like trying new and different Chinese food. I have eaten foods that I never thought possible such as frog, snake, yak, rabbit, pig feet, duck and cow intestine. Hot pot is delicious and fun to go with a group of friends. But my favorite food is Lanzhou la mian. I also like chow mian, lamb and cabbage. The best Lanzhou la mian restaurant in Yangzhou is near liberation bridge. To go along with the delicious food, cold Tsingtao beer is refreshing and argouto baijiu quenches any thirst.
Before coming to China I had seen beautiful pictures of the natural scenery and images of city life. I have been fortunate to visit some of the natural wonders as well as some of the cities; and I have noticed that there is a large variety in China. In this respect China reminds me of the United States. From the ice capped peaks in Tibet, to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, the deserts of Xinjang, all the way to the flat farmland and rice fields of Jiangsu. The U.S. also has mountain ranges, large grasslands, deserts and flat farmland such as my home state, Iowa. Jiangsu has become my new home, but it still reminds me of my old home among the cornfields in Iowa.
With so many good things about China its hard to say which is my favorite. It has taken me a long time to decide between learning a new language, working with kids, eating new and delicious food or seeing the different parts of China. My favorite thing in the whole wide world about living in China is leaving Yangzhou city in a taxi at night. This is because I get to stick my head out the taxi window and let the 'laoban' know I am just a foreigner going back to my school.
