Eating Out/Dining In

Let me begin by
stating, that I am
no culinary expert.
However, if one is
invited to someone’s
home, or to go out
to a fancy
restaurant (whether
it is for lunch or
dinner); get
yourself prepared to
be impressed.
Chinese people often
show their
hospitality to
friends by inviting
them to have a meal.
Meals are often
elaborate affairs,
and dishes are
expected not only to
taste good, but to
be appealing to the
eyes as well.
For breakfast I
often like to eat
dòu shā bāo (steamed
bun with red-bean
paste), or cài bāo
(steamed bun with
vegetables), or ròu
bāo (steamed bun
with meat). For
lunch I like to eat
Yangzhou chǎo fàn
(Yangzhou fried rice
with egg), & gōngbào
jīdīng (diced
chicken with
cashews) … but I
digress.
When going to
someone’s home,
there are four rules
of etiquette which
one should follow.
Firstly, one should
bring a small gift
for the host or
hostess e.g. a fruit
basket. If you are
invited to your
girlfriends home for
the first time, and
you wish to impress
her family. I
recommend that you
bring one or two
wine bottles for her
father. (In China, a
girl when she
reaches the marrying
age is known as her
father’s wine
bottle.) And for her
mother some
chocolate (as all
women like
chocolate, right?)
In addition, the
gift should not be
either cheap or too
expensive.
Some other rules of
thumb, which one
should follow are
(ii) wait to be
seated; as you do
not want to
mistakenly sit in
the host or
hostess’s preferred
seat. (iii) when
toasting others your
glass should be held
lower / at a lower
angle than your
elders and/or
superiors. (iv)
Never place your
chopsticks upright
in your bowl of rice
or any other meal
for that matter, as
it represents death
or misfortune.
The one festival,
which I like the
most in China is the
Spring Festival /
Chinese New Year. It
is similar to
Thanksgiving Day in
North America or
Christmas Day in
other countries.
During the Spring
Festival the whole
family gets
together; even
though they may have
been living or
working far away
during the rest of
the year. One can
expect to see lavish
spreads of food with
mouth-watering
delicacies for the
New Year’s Eve
Dinner.
Two or three days
before the actual
Chinese New Year;
the home, the
neighbourhood, the
city, everywhere is
abuzz with life. The
supermarkets are
packed with people
buying vegetables,
meats, fruits,
snacks in
preparation for the
Chinese New Year’s
Eve Dinner.
I myself have never
actually partaken of
a Chinese New Year’s
Eve Dinner, but I
yearn to very much.
It is during this
time that I wish
that some how I
could also have a
family in China. So
that I could be a
part of the joyous
festivities, family
bonding and love,
that is the Spring
Festival / Chinese
New Year.
So come to Yangzhou,
China and experience
the savory cuisine
you have always
dreamt of eating.
You will be able to
eat to your hearts
content. We are
waiting on you!
