My Second Hometown Yangzhou

by Jason Harding
Joined since: 2005 - 2008

Origin: Trinidad and Tobago

My name is Jason Harding. I am twenty-seven years old, and I am from Trinidad and Tobago. My country is located in the Caribbean, which is also known as the West Indies.

My country is very small compared to China. Its size is about 5,128 sq km, and it has approximately 1.3 million people. Its topography is similar to that of the South American continent, most noticeably Venezuela.Trinidad is the birthplace of the steel drum or “pan” – a popular musical instrument created during the 20th century. While Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago may be the oldest in the world, and is regarded as “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Tobago is mainly a tourism island. Many tourists visit Tobago every year for its beautiful and scenic beaches. The beaches in Tobago have white sands with clear blue-green water.

I have been in China for more than two years, having arrived in China in August 2003. I have taught at Nanjing 21st Century Bilingual School for one year. I have also taught at Yangzhou College of Education for one year, and at several schools within Yangzhou City i.e. Yi Lei Primary School, Mei Yuan Bilingual School, et al. I lived in New York City (NYC), United States of America (U.S.A.) for four and a half years before coming to China. I studied at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY), where I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Computer Information Systems.

I like Yangzhou for many reasons; one reason is its relative small size. I dislike crowded places and so Yangzhou’s small size geographically and comparatively small population suits me well, as it reminds me of my country. I also like Yangzhou’s canals where one can walk down to the water’s edge and escape the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The quiet and dimly lit alleys (at night) that lead to the canals provide a feeling of seclusion, even though one may be minutes from hundreds of pedestrians.

In my country a relaxed, laid back atmosphere is the norm. While Yangzhou may not have laissez-faire atmosphere to the extent that my country does, it is not as fast paced as Shanghai or Beijing, and so I admire Yangzhou for its slow pace of life. It has a good environment in which to raise a family.

In my opinion, Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School is the best school that I have taught at in China. Its treatment of its foreign teachers is unmatched. In addition Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School dedication and concern for its students, ensures that every child will receive a first class education, and have a strong foundation upon which to build their hopes and dreams.

I hope to continue working at Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School and to make Yangzhou my adopted home.
